Our ESL/ELL Content Team has recently begun a new venture! We are currently in the process of creating reading passages specifically geared towards the English Language Learner. The first batch has just been released! While there are currently only four passages available, we were excited to get them into our customers’ hands so they can use them and give us feedback.
What types of passages are there?
There are two passages at the Middle School Level (Level G) and two passages at the High School Level (Level J). The Level G passages are geared towards English Language Learners with English Language Proficiency Levels of 2 and 3. The Level J passages are geared towards English Language Learners with ELP Levels of 3 and 4.
- Level G:
- Visiting a Wildlife Center: ELP-3 – Students are asked to use the information found in a flyer from a Wildlife Center to answer a variety of questions. Passage and questions use several visual stimuli to assist students.
- Grocery Shopping with Mom: ELP-2 – Realistic Fiction Passage: Mother and daughter go grocery shopping. Passage and questions use visual stimuli to assist students.
- Level J:
- Echo and Hera – A Modern Day Re-telling of an Ancient Myth: ELP-3 – This is an updated and simplified re-telling of the original Greek Myth. The passage contains visual stimuli which students are asked to incorporate in question answers.
- Is the Prom Really Worth it?: EPL-4 Nonfiction: Opinion Article – The author discusses the pros and cons of “Prom”. Article is accompanied by a glossary to assist students with vocabulary acquisition.
Each passage is accompanied by six questions. The questions focus on a variety of reading skills including but not limited to: vocabulary in context, reading comprehension, making inferences, identifying theme and main ideas.
