Several Literature Sets have been updated with extended response questions modeling the extended response question formats in the NYS Engage NY ELA curriculum modules. Included in the new update are comparison questions that ask the reader to draw conclusions on two of these literary classics in an extended response answer.
The following Literature Sets were updated with new extended response questions:
- The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
- As I Lay Dying
- The Great Gatsby
- Of Mice and Men
- A Separate Peace
- The Scarlet Letter
- Their Eyes Were Watching God
- To Kill a Mockingbird
- Death of a Salesman
- All My Sons
- The Crucible
The additional questions are robust and ask students to incorporate multiple skills in developing answers. The questions will help drive critical thinking and class discussions involving increased textual complexity and understanding.
These additions to the current multiple-choice sets were designed to challenge students to critically analyze each reading passage. All of the questions have been aligned to the Common Core State Standards and correlated to both Bloom’s Taxonomy and Webb’s Depth of Knowledge scales.
All questions provide students with content support; hints, reasons, and/or sample answers are written for each question. The type of content feedback a student receives is dependent on the type of question.
