Early America (Beginnings to 1492)

Elementary  /  Social Studies /  Early America (Beginnings to 1492)

Thousands of years ago, during the Ice Age, most of our planet’s water was frozen. This allowed people, who were on foot and following animal herds, to migrate from Asia into what we now call Alaska. These people, called Paleo-Indians, were the first to settle in the Americas and are the ancestors of modern American Indians. This culture developed agriculture and built villages and cities; over time their society evolved into the American Indian culture that we know today. Native American cultures would contribute agriculture, trade/barter, and governmental model to early American colonists. Meanwhile, other societies in Asia and Europe began exploring new trade routes that would bring them to the Americas.
